Groupage or full truck load — which one fits you?

People usually ask one question when choosing between the two: which is cheaper? The better question is: which gives me the lower total cost? Freight is not the only line item.
When groupage makes sense
If your cargo takes up less than half a trailer, groupage is almost always cheaper — you pay only for the space you use. Fixed loading days also make planning easier. The downside: cargo waits at the consolidation hub, gets handled more often, and transit takes a few days longer than a full load.
When a full truck makes sense
Three cases: your cargo fills most of the trailer, time is critical, or the goods are delicate. A full load is loaded once and goes straight to destination. Less handling means less damage risk. When a shipment is holding up a production line, the price gap stops mattering very quickly.
Costs people forget
- Groupage needs sturdier packaging; stretch wrap and edge protectors add cost.
- A full truck needs a forklift and dock ready on arrival; waiting time is charged.
- Groupage has a wider delivery window, which can be a problem for consignees who unload by appointment.
