The Middle Corridor is the rail route that starts in Türkiye, crosses Georgia and Azerbaijan, traverses the Caspian Sea into Kazakhstan and continues to China. With the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars line in service, it has become a genuine alternative.
Why people choose it
Sea freight to China takes 30-40 days. Air takes 3 days but costs ten times as much. The Middle Corridor sits in between: 15-20 days transit at two to three times sea freight rates. It is the right fit for cargo that cares about time but cannot absorb air freight.
What to watch in practice
- The Caspian crossing: the Baku-Aktau ferry link is weather-sensitive. Delays of a few days are normal in winter, so build slack into your plan.
- Wagon availability: space gets tight in peak season. Book at least two weeks before your loading date.
- Paperwork: several countries are crossed, so transit declarations must be prepared in sequence. One missing document does not hold the train — it holds your wagon.
What suits this route
Anything that fits a container. Machinery parts, automotive components, chemicals in permitted ADR classes and durable consumer goods move on this line regularly. Tank and reefer containers are available for cold chain, though they take longer to plan.
